Clive Barker is widely regarded as one of the best minds in the horror business and this story is no exception.
It’s widely known that the movie ‘Hellraiser’ was based on this book yet in my opinion, this is even better than that classic movie. The characters seem to be less 2D in the novel than they are in the movie and thus, you invest more in them.
The writing is as you could expect from Barker. Slow and steady with flashes of violence and sex, yet none of it is done in an over the top way. Considering the story, that’s a massive surprise.
The pace of the book works as one of it’s strengths too. Some of the horror writers of today seem to want to rush through the characters to get to the ‘juicy bits’ but Barker doesn’t do that. His deliberate pace adds to the suspense and anticipation.
An essential purchase for horror fans.
