2011 is the 25th Anniversary of the original release of Michael Mann's stylish thriller MANHUNTER, the first film adaptation of Thomas Harris's ‘Red Dragon’, thus also the screen debut of the infamous Hannibal Lecktor, as played here by Brian Cox.

Will Graham (William Petersen) is persuaded to return from retirement by his colleague Jack Crawford, who convinces him that his ability to understand the thoughts of a murderer can help them to capture elusive serial killer, ‘The Tooth-Fairy’. Facing the desperate and grisly task, Graham employs the help of old foe Hannibal Lecktor and thus puts himself at the mercy of a ruthless and sinister genius. But as Graham opens himself up to the mind of a killer, just how far is he willing to fall back into the old life he promised his family that he had left far behind…?

The Original Hannibal - and the best?

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first adaptation of Thomas Harris' 'Red Dragon, you couldn't do much better than this. Michael Mann's film was always the best in the 'Hannibal' adaptations, darker and more atmospheric. An unnerving, edge of your seat thriller, with brilliant performances throughout. It didn't do the business it deserved, this was reserved for the more light weight movies that followed.

Brian Cox, the original 'Hannibal Lektor', delivers an intense performance & a real menace that far outweighs the over-rated fava bean lip-smacking of Anthony Hopkins. William Peterson and Tom Noonan also bring their top game to proceedings, ensuring a tour de force of excellent performances.

Whilst the 80's trappings may be slightly distracting to some viewers, the slick direction and overall feel of the movie, as well as the throughly absorbing plot, soon make you forget you're watching a film released 25 years previous.

This is one of Michael Mann's most accomplished movies, easily standing up against his more recent fare. I'd almost go so far to say it's better than Heat.

The extra's include a Director's cut and some extremely fine featurettes. I highly recommend this to everyone, especially fans of well crafted and high quality thrillers.
