Depression, as with any mental illness, is a dangerous thing to use for the back drop of a comedy. If you do it right, you get Rain Man, if you do it wrong you get Observe and Report. The Beaver is closer to the former, but only because of a solid script and Mel Gibson.
Jodie Foster directs, as well as co-starring in, 'The Beaver', and her direction is servicable, at best. She does the job. Shes done better in the past, a statement that can be added to her performance here.
Mel Gibson, however, is on rare form, bringing a heartfelt likability to 'Walter'. At times heart-wrenching, in others Hilarious. This is Gibson at his best.
Anton Yelchin is also worth noting, with a brilliant performance throughout, even if he's obviously a littel too old for the role.
The script is solid, but I found my concerns with Walter leaning towards his business and his relationship with his eldest son, as opposed to his marriage, which I found myself not really caring about.
The film, overall, is very funny and heartfelt, even if the tone takes a savage left turn 20 minutes towards the end. With no extras, this disc is incredibly bare, but worth getting just for Gibson.
