Inspired by Mary Norton's classic children's book The Borrowers, tiny 14 year old Arrietty lives under the floorboards of an old house with her father and mother.

Their peaceful life is dramatically changed when the ever curious Arrietty accidentally allows herself to be seen by Sho, a poorly and lonesome 12 year old human boy. The fledgling friendship between the two lonely children causes Haru the housekeeper to become aware of the borrowers' existence. The family of little borrowers are forced to choose between staying in their well-established home or leaving for the uncertainty of the great outdoors.

Absolutely Gorgeous

Studio Ghibli have gained themselves a reputation for making superior and extremely beautiful movies over the years and when they release movies such as this one, it's easy to see that the reputation is well deserved.

Arrietty is based on the classic novel 'The Borrowers' by Mary Norton and is extremely faithful to the story yet also manages to add it's own unique spin as well.

The animation is second to none but as a Studio Ghibli release, that aspect is almost never in doubt. Yet here, the sheer beautiful nature of the animation really adds to the overall feel of the movie itself. The scenes absolutely come to life with every little detail, even adding little things in the background too as if to make the movie even more of an experience for the viewer.

The writing is beautiful in it's simplicity. The characters are so well rounded that you care about every single character, even the less important ones.

The music also plays a brilliant part in really adding to the suspense in the scenes that Arrietty appears to be in danger and also in the scenes between Arrietty and Sow, the music really adds layers to the growing friendship between the two children.

The picture and sound quality are absolutely crystal clear and really enable the viewer to get lost in the story itself.

The only part of this release that I found to be disappointing was the lack of special features but at the same time, the storyboards are a great way to see the evolution of the story itself.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this to everyone. To people with or without children, to fans of animation, hell to anyone that likes a good quality movie. The only reason the score isn't a bit higher is just the lack of extras.

Definitely one to buy straight away.
