Awkward But Funny

The trailer for this movie was incredibly misleading. It lead the viewer to believe this would be one of those slapstick style comedies. It's much better than that.

While it is more drama than comedy, it is still a funny movie. The interplay between John and Molly is brilliant and really portrays how awkward the start of a relationship is. However I would have really liked to see more of us the two of them in the beginning of the movie instead of a little bit then throwing Cyrus in to the mix.

That's where waters become a little murky. When Cyrus, played by Jonah Hill, turns up is when the movie turns in to a love it or hate it kind of deal. While he plays Cyrus as an absolute a-hole, he really ramps up the awkwardness of the relationship between him and his mum. Also the ways he tries to creep John out are very funny. Hit and miss but still funny.

John, played by John C. Reilly, is very good in the role. He somehow manages to come across as lonely and pathetic yet loveable at the same time although there are a couple of moments where he goes too far in to the realm of pathetic but those times are few and far between.

Marisa Tomei gives a very heartfelt performance as Molly yet I can't help but feel like something was missing from her performance.

I also love the 'indie' feel of the movie as well and the fact that it doesn't look like a glossy Hollywood movie. Instead it looks like a low budget indie movie but with more famous than usual people in.

The writing is very good and honest, which recently seems to be a rarity for this kind of movie these days.

The only extra feature with this movie is a digital version that you can watch 'on the go' as the advert says. I would have liked to seen some interviews or some behind the scenes stuff on how they made the movie or came up with the story but alas, that was not to be.

All in all, it's a good movie. While more drama than comedy, there are still some funny moments. Jonah Hill is incredibly creepy as Cyrus but in a funny, awkward way.

It's not a movie that is going to break any records any time soon but it's still worth a view.
