Low Budget But Intelligent

The Frankenstein story itself has both been filmed and inspired many other movies so many times over that you might feel yet another take on it would be over kill.

Not so in this case.

Inspired by the classic Mary Shelley tale, this is a low budget yet intelligently written and paced horror movie. While the acting in a couple of places is a little poor, those people are soon 'dispatched' with so for me, they weren't that much of an annoyance.

The director here also wrote this tale and crafted a movie that starts with a bang but then slows down to masterfully build to the shocking finale. While the ending may not be the major twist they were hoping for, it was still a good way to end the movie.

Another thing I have to give praise for is the make up work. While yes this is a low budget horror movie, it's really evident that they put a lot of effort in to both the make up and the feel of the movie itself.

Told in little snippets, using each character as a 'case study', this horror movie comes across as an intelligent B movie instead of the normal cheese fest because of the psychological aspect of this movie that has been done so well.

The cast overall is pretty good as far as a horror movie such as this goes, even the modern day B movie scream queen, Tiffany Shepis, is accounted for here as the scientist who creates the serum itself. Instead of just being a run and scream character, she gives a really good performance here and I for one was really impressed by her.

The picture quality suffers in a couple of scenes but overall it's a pretty good transfer and gives a cold, clinical feel to proceedings and the flashes of blood really fly off the screen when the shit hits the fan.

The special features here are pretty standard for a low budget movie. Just the trailer for the movie itself as well as some for other releases, along with a weblink for the company that released this DVD.

If you go in to this movie expecting an Oscar winner, yes you would be disappointed. However if you go in to this movie expecting an intelligent and modern take on the Frankenstein's Monster legend, then you will be entertained here.
