In the 1970's, Sci-Fi was incredibly popular, especially at the end of the decade thanks to the wonder of Star Wars.
Then this series exploded on to television screens. While it was thought of as a Star Wars rip off, I think that's incredibly unfair. There are great performances and story lines all running through this series.
Running through the series is a sense of desperation and despair yet it's done in a much more subtle way than the 'reimagined' series. They also tackle some hard hitting subjects as well. While some of their attitudes may seem a little out dated, that adds to the charm of the series.
The special effects are another thing about the series that looks dated but that said, the series is over 30 years old. In all honesty, the special effects are the same as they would have been in Star Wars had George Lucas not updated.
The performances are one part where this series does stand out. They managed to get some absolutely top drawer actors to appear in this series. Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Lorne Green are just a few to mention. The interplay between the characters really just shine from the screen. It really does feel like they are comrades in a war.
The picture quality, as well as the sound, does suffer in some of the scenes. Like I said before, it is over 30 years old so they have done a really good job with the transfer itself.
The special features is where this set really does set itself apart. While some of the features are short, they still manage to cram a whole load of information in to the time frames. I also liked all of the deleted scenes as well. While you can see why they were taken out, it's still interesting to see where they would have fit in to the grand scheme of things.
Highly recommended.
