Shameless Series 6

shameless_2d_packshot

The Gallagher and Maguire families return for 16 more episodes of truly outrageous behaviour. With stints in jail, lesbian affairs, fake suicides and Frank Gallagher wandering aimlessly through it all, this is yet another eventful season on the Manchester estate.

Shameless is a select taste, much like The Royal Family, you either love or hate it. It has one of those sense of humours which you either laugh out loud to or cringe at. I’m happy to say that I’m one of the former fans of the series. Saying that, Season 6 seems a little stale in comparison to the earlier seasons of the series.

Don’t get me wrong, it still has plenty of highly humorous and entertaining episodes, it just feels a bit like Shameless is struggling a little. It’s entirely possible that the joke has gotten old. Some of the episodes seem to heading into surreal territory just for the sake of it. In episode one Frank has to prove that there is a good man on the estate when he hears the voice of baby Stella. Whilst it’s reasonably amusing, it’s also needlessly bizarre, for a series that despite its plots has always been set firmly in the real world.

David Threlfall continues to excel as Frank Gallagher, and he seems to be the only character that is given good material. Throughout he gets the best lines and the funniest things to do, which has always been the case, but never to the detriment of the enjoyment of the other characters.

All in all, this is a reasonable season, but nowhere near as enjoyable as the first 3. Hopefully the series will pick itself back up again for season 7.
