Peter Falk returns as Lieutenant Columbo in Season 10 Volume 2, the final selection of episodes starring the unconventional yet brilliant detective. The boxset contains 6 episodes, totalling over 8 hrs of classic Columbo entertainment.
Peter Falk will forever be associated with Columbo. He played the unique character for nealry 30 years, with the first episode airing in 1971. The episodes in this boxset are all from 1990, and mark the end of the detectives screen career.
Amongst the episodes are some real gems, my favourite being ‘Undercover’, in which the format of the series is played with a little. Columbo goes undercover (hence the title of the episode) as a member of the mob in an attempt to find clues to the death of two men and the truth behind a mysterious picture. This is all the more enjoyable if you happen to be aware that Falk had a career of gangster roles before he was cast as Columbo.
My second favourite is the final episode, ‘Columbo LikesThe Nightlife’. A more traditionally formatted Columbo episode, Columbo is attempting to discover the truth behind a murder amde to look like a suicide, againmst the backdrop of night clubs and tabloid journalism. There are some brilliant moments that demonstrate Columbo’s deductive reasoning and unique sense of humour.
Columbo has always had a very strict quality control to the episodes and there is a rarity of bad episodes throughout it’s run. The fact that celebrities would clamour for roles in the series speaks highly of it’s quality and popularity, and this boxset is no different.
