Night At The Museum 2 - Battle Of The Smithsonian

Ben Stiller returns as museum security guard Larry, now a successful inventor, in Night At The Museum 2. Despite his success he misses his friends at the Natural History Museum, and follows them to the Smithsonian when they are packed off to be put into storage. However, the mystical tablet that brings them to life has the same effect on the exhibits there and the evil Pharaoh Kamunrah (Hank Azaria) intends to use it to raise an undead army.

Much like the first film, Night At The Museum 2 relies alot on the CGI spectacle of bringing exhibets to life in the museums of the title. However, this time around it also brings along a decent plot and a villain worth rooting against. Pharaoh Kamunrah is a force to be reckoned with, as well as being a great comedy invention.

Stiller once again brings his everyman charm to the role of Larry, throwing in a talent for slapstick and great comedy timing. He does, however, fail to bring with him any chemistry for his romantic interest Amelia Eckhart, played by the always excellent Amy Adams. Adams shines, perfect for the role of spunky sidekick, and just about steals every scene she’s in.

Great comedy turns are had by the supporting cast, most notably from Steve Coogan, Owen Wilson and Bill Hader as General Custer. Robin Williams is fine, though does seem to be on auto pilot.

Over all it’s a fairly decent family movie, though it does tend to lean away from clever humour and more towards silly slapstick, generally involving monkeys. Now, I’m all for monkeys, but this film really has the potential for more. It is an improvement on the original, though only slightly.
