Transformers - Revenge Of The Fallen

transformers2_dramatic

The giant transforming alien robots return in Michael Bay’s Transformers - Revenge Of The Fallen. And what a disappointment it is….

The Autobot’s are working side by side with the US military, hunting down Decepticon’s worldwide in top secret operations. After a highly explosive initial encounter a dying Decepticon warns of the return of ‘The Fallen’. Not long after, Spike Witwicky discovers a sliver of the Allspark and begins seeing Cybertronian symbols. With Megatron returning from the dead and numerous Decepticon’s invading, have the US military and the Autobots got a losing battle ahead of them?

The action is typically over the top and fast paced, very much a Michael Bay trademark. Unfortunately, it is even harder to keep track of who’s who in these battle sequences than it was in the first. No attempt is made to differentiate between many of the Transformers, and the ones that are given personalities are often misjudged. Whilst Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Megatron and Bumblebee work quite well, the rather offensive racial stereotypes of the Twins and the poor attempt at humour with Jetfire fall flat on their robotic faces.

It is great (as a Transformers fan of old) to see Arcee, Jetfire, Sideswipe, Soundwave and Ravage, it is disappointing that the characters are not fully explored or fleshed out in any way. The Constructicon’s were a welcome sight, but their combined form was rather poor, all things considered.

The film suffers from poor pacing, ill-judged attempts at humour, a lack of humanity (no pun intended) and an overly inflated run time. Personally I think Bay has done all he can with Transformers and it’s time to step aside and let someone else take the reigns. My suggestions would be J.J. Abrams or Peter Jackson.

It’s worth a rental, mindless entertainment that it is, but if you’re looking for something substantial, look elsewhere.
